How to Create Meaning When Life Stops Making Sense

A conversation on mood, purpose, community, and the pressures of modern life with Dr. Eric Maisel.

Dear friends,

For more than 60 years, I’ve sat with people who quietly whisper the same fear:

“Life doesn’t feel meaningful anymore… and I don’t know why.”

You may feel it too — the overwhelm, the loneliness, the pressure of modern life that pushes us away from one another and deeper into our own minds.
And when life stops making sense, we often assume the problem is inside us.

But this week, I spoke with someone who has spent his entire career helping people understand this inner struggle: Dr. Eric Maisel, a psychologist who has written more than 60 books on creativity, purpose, and the human condition.

Eric said something that stayed with me:

“Meaning isn’t something you find. It’s something you make.”

Meaning is a feeling — and like all feelings, it comes and goes.
When it leaves, we imagine we’ve done something wrong. But nothing is wrong. The feeling simply needs to be coaxed back.

In our conversation, Eric talked about:

  • Why do so many people feel lost in this moment in history,

  • How loneliness has become an epidemic,

  • Why creative minds often struggle more deeply,

  • and how community — real community — is the medicine we’re missing.

He also spoke about redesigning “the room of your mind” so your thoughts support you rather than sabotage you. A simple idea, but a powerful one:
If you change the environment of your inner world, the thoughts you generate begin to change, too.

And I shared a few stories of my own — including the moments in my life when purpose wasn’t something I discovered, but something I decided.

Life may not always feel meaningful. But meaning can always be made.

If you’re feeling lost, tired, scattered, or uncertain, I invite you to listen to this conversation.
It won’t give you easy answers — but it will give you hope, direction, and a sense that you are not alone in your search.

Golden light,
Dr. Richard L. Miller

A Year-End Invitation

As the year comes to a close, I want to make my work a little more accessible for those who may need it most.

For the final months of 2025, I’m opening a limited number of one-on-one sessions at a reduced rate — $250 for 30 minutes (regularly $300).

These are not traditional therapy sessions. They’re practical, compassionate conversations where we explore tools to quiet the mind, ease anxiety, and find calm amidst the noise of daily life.

If you’ve been thinking about reaching out, now is a good time.
Let’s take a quiet moment together to reflect, breathe, and reconnect before the new year begins.

1-minute mind control (my latest book)

Traditional mindfulness and meditation techniques often require a huge investment of your most precious resource (time) without guarantees of results.

My own version of mindfulness—what I sometimes refer to as “mind control”—can be mastered in much less time if you commit to regular 60-90 second practice throughout the day.
