11 Strangers, One Week—What Group Psychedelic Therapy Actually Looks Like | Dr. Jarrett Rose

How 11 strangers in Jamaica proved that group psychedelic therapy could work better than expensive individual sessions

Dear friends,

Sometimes the most profound discoveries about healing come from researchers who've experienced being broken by the very systems they now study. Recently, I had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Jarrett Rose, a sociologist whose personal journey from high school dropout to PhD researcher mirrors the unconventional paths that often lead to breakthrough discoveries.

Jarrett's story resonates deeply with me. Diagnosed with ADHD, medicated with Ritalin against his will, he failed out of high school and represents countless young people written off by rigid educational systems. What's particularly striking is that during my years running the Cokenders Alcohol and Drug Program, a significant percentage of the cocaine addicts I treated had started with Ritalin as children. Yet here was Jarrett, decades later, conducting groundbreaking research as an assistant professor at SUNY Polytechnic Institute.

What makes his research extraordinary isn't just his academic credentials, but his willingness to step outside the ivory tower and actually participate in the experiences he studies. When he shared his findings about group psychedelic therapy from a week-long retreat in Jamaica, I realized we were discussing something that could fundamentally change how healing happens in America. While clinical trials focus on expensive individual sessions costing thousands, 99% of people are using psychedelics in groups. What Jarrett witnessed challenges our entire approach to healing and suggests we've been missing the most powerful element of all.

Golden light,

Dr. Richard Louis Miller

New Book Coming Soon

After over 60 years of work as a clinical psychologist, I've finally written the book I've always wanted to share.

This July, I'll be launching Master Your Mind: Practical Tools to Calm Anxiety, Silence Your Inner Critic, and Stop Overthinking.

It's a collection of the very tools I've taught in therapy rooms, used in hospitals, and practiced myself through some of life's most difficult moments. They're simple. They're powerful. And they're needed now more than ever.

More details coming soon!

You can now order my latest book, Psychedelic Medicine at the End of Life: Dying Without Fear. This work represents a culmination of my decades-long journey as a clinical psychologist, exploring how psychedelics can transform our approach to death and dying.

The book examines how substances like LSD, MDMA, and psilocybin can be powerful tools in confronting our fears of mortality, ultimately leading to richer, more fulfilling lives. I'm honored to include insights from renowned experts in the field, as well as my own experiences.

Here's what some esteemed colleagues are saying:

James Fadiman, Ph.D., calls it "a deeply uplifting, clear, and compassionate guide to dying and how psychedelics, used correctly, diminish our fears about approaching the door that opens at the end of our life."

Charles S. Grob, M.D., describes it as "a masterful overview of an area of vital importance to our modern world... a valuable resource and contribution to the growing field of psychedelic medicine."

Julie Holland, M.D., notes that "Psychedelics may offer a mini-death rehearsal, offering a glimpse of spiritual oneness, enabling us to be less afraid at the end of our lives."

I hope this book will inspire meaningful conversations and new perspectives on how we approach the end of life.
