This Might Be Why You’re Unmotivated
The hidden reason your motivation fades—and how to get it back.
Dear friends,
Motivation doesn’t just come from within.
It also comes from the people we let into our lives.
I learned that lesson a long time ago—on a ski slope.
I was standing at the top of a hill, teaching myself how to ski. A man stopped next to me, looked down the slope, and said,
“Wow, look down there. You better not go down—you’ll fall.”
Without thinking, I jumped.
Did I fall? Probably. But I got up, brushed off the snow, and kept going.
Later, I realized the real lesson wasn’t about skiing—it was about who I surrounded myself with.
Some people will tell you not to try, not to risk, not to dream too big.
They think they’re protecting you, but really, they’re passing on their fear.
Others see your potential. They encourage you. They say, “You can do this.”
“Negativity is contagious—but so is encouragement. Choose your company like your health depends on it.”
Because it does.
If you spend your time with people who inspire you, who make you feel capable and alive, you’ll notice your motivation return.
But if you’re always around people who doubt, complain, or criticize—your energy will fade.
So take a look around.
Who makes you want to move, create, and try again?
Those are your people. Stick with them.
Golden light,
Dr. Richard Louis Miller
P.S.I share many short, practical practices like this in my book, Master Your Mind: Practical Tools to Calm Anxiety, Silence Your Inner Critic, and Stop Overthinking. They’re designed to help you find calm, presence, and gratitude in just a few mindful moments each day.
1-minute mind control (my new book)
Traditional mindfulness and meditation techniques often require a huge investment of your most precious resource (time) without guarantees of results.
My own version of mindfulness—what I sometimes refer to as “mind control”—can be mastered in much less time if you commit to regular 60-90 second practice throughout the day.
Breathing. Witnessing. Changing the channel on negative thoughts.
I’ve honed these techniques over a lifetime of personal and professional practice, and now I’m sharing them with the world.
