The Creep: How Small Habits Shape Your Entire Life
The surprising truth about who really has to rebuild it — and why it’s not you.
Dear friends,
Nobody ever became an alcoholic by deciding one day to drink an entire bottle of vodka. That's not how it begins.
It starts with one cocktail with dinner. Maybe before dinner. For some of you, after dinner. You do this for weeks, months, even years. Then, slowly, almost imperceptibly, you add a second one occasionally. Then regularly.
You see what happens?
When we're 20 or 25, we forget there's a good chance we'll live to 55, 65, 75—or like myself, 86. If you start that "one cocktail" habit at 20 and slowly increase until you're 50, by that time you could be having three, four, or five cocktails a night.
That's what I call the creep.
And it doesn't just happen with alcohol.
I recently began working with a patient who weighs 450 pounds. You might think he suddenly went from 170 to 450 overnight by gorging himself. Absolutely not. Slowly, over time, he went up, up, up from age 15 to 35—huge by 38, gigantic by now.
All of these changes happen gradually, invisibly. So slowly you don't even notice.
But here's what gives me hope after 64 years in practice: the creep works in reverse too.
You can do something positive, like saying nice things to yourself—what we call affirmations or self-gratitude. Imagine saying ten nice things to yourself every single day. Who would even consider such a thing?
But maybe you could.
Ten self-compliments a day equals 3,650 a year. At the end of ten years, you'd have spoken 36,500 pieces of kindness into your own mind. You should be flying high with confidence and self-worth.
Remember these little truths: A little over time is a lot. And watch for the creep in your own life.
Where is it taking you? Up or down? Forward or backward?
The choice, as always, is yours.
Golden light,
Dr. Richard Louis Miller
