How to Heal Any Relationship
The quiet power of apology and forgiveness
Dear friends,
After 65 years as a clinical psychologist, I’ve seen countless relationships fall apart — and just as many come back together.
The difference always comes down to two moments of courage:
The first to say, “I’m sorry.”
The second to say, “I forgive you.”
That’s it. No long speeches, no scorekeeping, no “if you hadn’t done this.”
Just one person taking responsibility for the hurt they caused, and the other letting it go.
“I’m sorry I hurt your feelings.”
“I’m sorry I spoke to you in a condescending way.”
And then the reply:
“Thank you for apologizing. I forgive you.”
You shake hands. You hug. You move on.
That’s the beauty of repair.
Because holding on to resentment is like holding your breath — the longer you hold it, the less life you have left in you.
When we forgive, we exhale. We let the body unclench. We give ourselves permission to feel peace again.
Forgiveness doesn’t mean forgetting. It means refusing to carry the pain any longer.
So today, ask yourself:
Who can I forgive?
Who can I say “I’m sorry” to — and mean it?
The answer might just heal your heart.
